Red Cliff

Also known as The Battle of Red Cliff and Chi Bi, this is a 2008 epic film based on the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This film, which is being released in Asia in two parts (the first part was released in July 2008 and the second part in early 2009) and will be released to North American viewers sometime in 2009.


The film covers the famous Battle of Red Cliffs, fought in 208 AD, between the warlord Cao Cao and his two most dangerous enemies, Liu Bei and Sun Quan. This event, along with many others from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, are well known and very popular in China.   The film is directed by John Woo and stars Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Hu Jun, Lin Chi-ling and Zhao Wei.  It has an estimated budget of US$80 million, Red Cliff  is the most expensive Asian-financed film to be made.
