Around the fourth or fifth century AD a Latin poet named Symphosius created a collection of one hundred riddles. This work would be widely read in the Middle Ages, and inspired many medieval writers to create their own riddles. Symphosius’ riddles were each just three lines long, and were mostly simple answers based on nature or every day objects. We chose fifteen of our favourite riddles to see how many you can answer:
