Crescent Dawn: The Rise of the Ottoman Empire and the Making of the Modern Age
By Si Sheppard
Osprey Publishing
ISBN: 9781472851468
This book explores the political and military history of the Ottoman Empire, tracing its rise in the fourteenth century through to the latter half of the sixteenth. It offers detailed accounts of major battles and sieges, with a particular focus on conflicts against European powers.
Excerpt:
Everything was in a state of flux as the Renaissance evolved into the Reformation. The great chain of being between ruler and ruled that governed the universe broke down, and traditional loyalties could no longer be taken for granted. It was an age of expansion and discovery that transformed the world and laid the foundation for our modern, globalized age. The Ottoman Empire was at the center of this process – geographically, politically, militarily. Contemporaries were well aware of that fact, but its significance has faded with time, lost in the narrative of decline and othering during the 19th and 20th centuries, when the ascendant Western great powers were in a position to marginalize the crumbling Ottoman Empire as the “Sick Man of Europe.” This study is intended to introduce a 21st-century audience to Ottoman centrality in shaping the trajectory of our history and structuring the geopolitics that continues to define our reality today.
Who is this book for?
Readers seeking an accessible introduction to the Ottoman Empire—especially its military history—will find this book valuable. Notably, the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent (1520–66) occupies approximately a quarter of the volume.
“This is a fascinating and well-researched book. At 439 pages, excluding the Notes, Bibliography and Index, it is not an easy or light read. Your reviewer learned a good deal from it. Readers with a military background will appreciate Dr Sheppard’s close attention to the evolution of Ottoman strategy; he also examines economic, religious and cultural factors in detail.” ~ review by Matellus Cimber II in Army Rumour Service.
