The Medieval Magazine: The North (Issue 47)

medieval mag 47In this week’s issue we take a look at northern Europe and winter in the Middle Ages. We put an eye on the Carta Marina and read about sagas, Viking hoards, ice-skating and board games.

The Carta Marina was created in the 16th century by Olaus Magnus, a Swedish historian and geographer – it is the earliest detailed map of Scandinavia, and is well-known for the images of creatures, such as sea monsters, that you can find on it. You can also find many scenes of daily life depicted on the map. We devoted a few pages to show you some of the interesting images you can see.
