The Globalised World of the Middle Ages: An archaeologist’s view

The Globalised World of the Middle Ages: An archaeologist’s view

Lecture by Anne Haour

Given at the University of East Anglia on October 4, 2016

Few of us today have not travelled beyond our local community or used imported goods. The idea of long distance connections between people is familiar. Perhaps more surprising is how far these connections can be traced back in time. This talk outlines how archaeologists can reveal the globalised world, with examples from medieval West Africa and the Indian Ocean. What can objects tell us about how our ancestors engaged with their immediate world, and the world beyond?
