Festival of Archaeology at Dunluce Castle today

Dunluce Castle in Northern Ireland will host a family friendly archaeological event on Saturday 25 July from 10.30am – 4.30pm.

As part of the Festival of Archaeology, the whole family will have the chance to step back in time and experience what life was like at this late medieval castle. Medieval music, musketry and cannon displays will add to the atmosphere as well as a chance to meet the blacksmith and infamous barber-surgeon.

Visitors will be able to explore the results of recent archaeological excavations at the castle, which have revealed the’ lost town’ of Dunluce and the terraced castle gardens. Geology themed tours of the iconic site will also offer the opportunity to explore the spectacular natural setting of the castle, perched on the cliffs of the north Antrim coastline.

Mark H Durkan said: “This event offers the public a fantastic opportunity to experience firsthand the vibrancy of Dunluce as it would have been 400 years ago at the peak of its power and importance. Archaeology tours of the lost 17th century town of Dunluce will give a new perspective on the castle, which would have sat at the heart of an extensive settlement.

“Visitors will be able to see some of the artefacts discovered during our most recent digs, including personal objects left by the townspeople 400 years ago and significant new evidence of an even earlier settlement dating to the time of the MacQuillans, the original builders of the castle.

“I encourage people to come along and experience our rich archaeological heritage at Dunluce on Saturday 25 July and join thousands of people from across the UK who will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Festival of Archaeology.”

Free parking for the event will be provided at the Magheracross tourist car park, with a free shuttle bus to the castle. Normal admission rates to the castle apply and no booking is necessary.
