Lincoln Castle reopens after £22 million refurbishment

Lincoln Castle has re-opened earlier this month after finishing a £22 million refurbishment, revealing new visitor experiences, including an underground exhibition home for Lincoln Cathedral’s 1215 Magna Carta.

The castle, which was built in 1068 on the site of a Roman fortress and is regarded as one of the country’s best examples of Norman fortifications, was closed in December to allow the renovations to take place.

Among the new attractions at the castle are:

  • A new home for Magna Carta and Charter of the Forest – the only place in the world where they can be viewed together – and widescreen cinema where you can immerse yourself in the story of King John and the barons.
  • A complete-circuit Medieval Wall Walk, offering spectacular views of the city, enhanced by a fascinating audio guide.
  • The newly-refurbished Victorian Prison – closed to the public for decades – including films, panels and digital interactive screens exploring prison life.
  • Archaeology uncovered during the works, including an internationally important Saxon sarcophagus, or stone coffin.
  • A new castle shop and café, offering souvenirs, gifts and refreshments.
