John Skelton’s ‘Speke Parott’

Just four days after this video was posted to Youtube, nearly 130 000 people have watched a reading of the Middle English poem Speke Parott.

This video comes from Skelton Project, created by three former students of the University of Groningen: Hiske Feenstra, Floor Kuiper and Nadine Kuipers. They aim to tell the story of John Skelton (c.1463 – 1529), a Tudor-era poet and tutor to the young Henry VIII. With the narration help of Professor Sebastian Sobecki, they posted this video that offers one of his poems.

After posting the video on October 7th, it was shared to the social media network Reddit, where it immediately found huge popularity. You can read more about the video’s rise to prominence from this article by the BBC.
