This month sees the launch of a new society promoting interest in the Battle of Bosworth, the last major battle of the Wars of the Roses. The battle, which took place in Leicestershire on 22 August 1485, was a defining moment in English history as it heralded the end of the Plantagenet dynasty and the rise of the Tudors.
The Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Society (BBHS) will be launched at the battlefield heritage centre, near Market Bosworth, on Saturday 16 August, during the annual battle re-enactment weekend. The aim of the society is to promote knowledge and understanding of the Battle of Bosworth by promoting archaeological study and research work in and around the battlefield site.
On 22 August 1485 the forces of King Richard III and of Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, engaged in battle. By the end of this momentous day in history, King Richard had been killed “fighting manfully in the thickest press of his enemies” – the last English king to die in battle – and Plantagenet rule came to an end in England after nearly 500 years, replaced by the Tudors.
The new society is sponsored by both the Richard III Foundation and the Henry Tudor Society, and is supported by numerous groups and individuals sharing an interest in the battle and its impact on English history, and who are keen to foster a deeper understanding of what happened in the Leicestershire countryside on that fateful day in 1485.
The objectives of the BBHS are:
- to promote the permanent preservation of the battlefield site as one of historic interest and benefit for the general public,
- to raise public awareness of the events leading up the battle with the promotion of the area as an integrated educational resource,
- to foster and promote programmes that encompass field work, archaeology, geography, geophysics, research, interpretation, genealogy and conservation, and
- to work in conjunction with landowners, individuals and organisations to help develop and communicate our knowledge of the battlefield and its surrounding areas.
