Ten Thoughts on Game of Thrones, Season 4 Episode 4: Oathkeeper

After missing a week from being on the road in the United Kingdom, and I have come back to catch up on what’s happening in Westeros.

Game of Thrones, Season 4 Episode 4

1. Although I missed the Episode 3: Breaker of Chains, it was hard to miss the reaction to the Jaime-Cersei rape scene. I was interested in seeing how this episode would portray Jaime and his next interaction with Cersei, as it would be telling on how they intended to depict that scene. It seems clear now that Jaime was never supposed to come across as an evil rapist, and it looks as if he will continue to be a protagonist for a little while. He meets with the imprisoned Tyrion and shows more brotherly affection. He then meets with Cersei, who is upset with Jamie, but more because of his failure to protect Joffrey than for anything he did to her.

2. We now know who was involved in the murder of Joffrey –  Lord Petyr Baelish and Lady Olenna. Littlefinger is right in that he would not be suspected of the crime, but we shouldn’t be too surprised he was the mastermind as his character seems to be one of cold-evil. Lady Olenna’s involvement is more understandable, as you wouldn’t want your granddaughter marrying that creep Joffrey either.

3. So far we have little idea of what kind of character Tommen will be – so far he is just a young and very naive boy who seems ripe for moulding. The scene with Margery sneaking into his room was excellent, as it shows how she is already beginning to use her manipulative skills to capture the boy’s heart.

4. I was disappointed with the Daenerys sideshow going on in Meereen – the capture of the city via slave revolt was way too easy and anti-climatic. It doesn’t seem like Daenerys has any real challenges or obstacles, and her development as a character seems to be at standstill so far this season. I’m worried the next few episodes will have Daenerys just march into cities unopposed while her underlings continue to have small-talk with each other.

5. The scenes around Craster’s Keep were more interesting – the rebel Night’s Watch seem like a terrible bunch of petty criminals. Their boisterous leader Karl seems like he will soon be at the wrong end of John Snow’s blade.

6. We get to see more of Bran and his companions, but they manage to get captured by Karl at Craster’s Keep. This seems to be leading to a reunion with John Snow, but the true threat to them might be Locke, the man sent by Roose Bolton.

7. We learn more about the White Walkers’ – if they have been taking Craster’s male offspring for years they might have already built up a large number of these monsters.  The depiction of the dead horse was very cool too!

8. The scene between Jaime and Brienne was touching, and I will miss their interactions. It seems to me that both characters believe they will never see each other again.

9. With ‘Oathkeeper’ we get another scene of a sword being named. When Joffrey named his sword a couple episodes back, the viewer was conditioned to see it as being a very frivolous thing to do. However in this scene

10. This episode drew a record audience in the United States – 6.95 million viewers. This season so far has seen their best ratings, so it seems that not too many viewers were ready to abandon Game of Thrones after the events of the Red Wedding (which had prompted a lot of tweets about never watching this show again).
