White, Black and Grey: recent discoveries at Aberdeen’s medieval friaries

Recent excavations at Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen have revealed 30 burials from the medieval Dominican (Black) friary as well as hints at remains of the buildings. This talk will present the latest evidence from this site and look at the other excavated medieval friaries, Franciscan (Grey) and Carmelite (white).
Alison Cameron’s first dig was with Professor Chris Morris FSA Scot at Birsay, Orkney summer 1980. She loved it and never looked back. Obtaining a B Tech (Hons) from Bradford in 1984, Alison specialised in human skeletal remains and came to Aberdeen in 1985 to carry out a human bone contract to examine bones from Carmelite friaries at Aberdeen, Linlithgow and Perth. She loved the city, got a job in Aberdeen City Council Archaeology Unit where she worked for 24 years until persuaded by Council cuts to take voluntary severance.

In 2010 she started Cameron Archaeology Ltd and now carries out archaeological projects in Aberdeen and Shire, Angus and Moray.
