For those looking for a little medieval in their home, this estate near New York City is considered one of America’s best examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The Davenport House in New Rochelle, New York, built in 1859, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its significant architectural history. It was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, one of the most successful American architects of the nineteenth century.

Situated on 1.43 acres of property, the house itself is over 12,000 square feet and includes seventeen bedrooms, six baths and eight fireplaces. It includes an elegant foyer, living room, dining room, library, ballroom, and large meeting room on first floor. The kitchen and some bathrooms have recently been renovated, and the large, partially above ground basement is finished with high ceilings.

All rooms in the building have “intricately designed parquet floors”. The main entrance hall has an open staircase, molded cornices, and a red marble fireplace. The semi-circular library has a wood-panelled ceiling, a fireplace and bookcases. The former billiard room has molded cornices, dado, and sliding interior shutters. The parlor and dining room have molded cornices, glazed sliding doors, and red marble fireplaces.

The house was built in 1859 for Lawrence Montgomery Davenport on an extensive property overlooking Long Island Sound. Further additions were made in the 19th century. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 because of its use of Gothic Revival architecture, which sought to revive the style of medieval Gothic architecture.
