From the producer of Alice in Wonderland, we are given an action-packed, Brothers Grimm fairytale come to life. Academy award winning actress Charlize Theron (Monster, North Country), Kristin Stewart of Twilight fame and hunky Chris Hemsworth (Thor, The Avengers) star in this magical, adult re-telling of the children’s classic, Snow White.
Snow White and the Huntsman opened in theatres on June 1st. Theron does a fantastic job playing the evil Queen Ravenna. She’s a scene stealer every time she appears onscreen. Theron’s Queen is one of the truly enjoyable features of this film, alongside the Dwarves. She is captivating to watch. Stewart, while awkward at times, manages to pull off a believeable Snow White, and a half decent English accent. Snow White is a strong, Joan of Arc type figure, and Stewart delivers a good performance as an innococent yet tenacious young woman fighting to wrest the realm back from her evil stepmother’s hands. Chris Hemsworth plays the Hunter in the usual tough guy, hack and slash style. It’s Thor meets Braveheart in medieval leather and a Scottish accent. The Dwarves are great, and in a Tolken-esque fashion, provide much needed comedic relief to a rather dark story. It’s not meant for young children due to it’s adult tone and violent battle scenes. This is more of a young adult film and teens are sure to flock to it because of Stewart and swoon-worthy Hemsworth.

The movie isn’t going to win any academy awards – unless it’s in the cinematography department. This isn’t something you go to see for the dialogue; let’ face it, it’s a Hollywood blockbuster mashed up with a medieval-fantasy theme. Why is it worth seeing? It’s worth seeing because it is visually stunning. The movie is breathtaking and you aren’t caught up in poor, distracting CGI. The producers manage to pull off a great deal in terms of eye candy; fairies, the magic mirror, Queen Ravenna’s transformation, the dark woods, and a slew of other neat tricks that never look cheap or over the top. It’s a beautifully filmed movie and has a Lord of the Rings feel to some of the scenery. All in all, it was an enjoyable fantasy film; I did not walk into this film with high hopes or expectations so this was a pleasant surprise. The movie is sure to delight those who see it with it’s sweeping imagery, epic battle scenes and jaw-dropping visuals.
