Abstract: In this article, we report on the construction and test burning of a selection of candles using historical materials and construction to varying degrees. We compare and contrast the different techniques in order to give the re-enactor or historical recreator an idea of the tradeoffs involved in using “correct” lighting. Along the way, we shed some light on what crafters and users of medieval lighting materials might have experienced.
