Moravian College to Host Conference in Medieval and Early Modern Studies

Moravian College will host the Sixth Annual Undergraduate Conference in Medieval and Early Modern Studies on Saturday, December 3. About 230 people will convene for the interdisciplinary conference that explores and celebrates the literature, history, art, and philosophy of the periods ranging from 500 CE to 1800 CE. More than 100 students from thirty-plus colleges across the country will present papers and performances.

In addition to the student presentations and performances, the day’s schedule will feature a plenary presentation by Bells & Motley, an olden music, dance and storytelling group, a presentation on calligraphy by Therese Swift-Hahn of Bella Scrittura Calligraphy and Design, and an exhibit on stringed instruments and decorative carvings by Alice Margerum of Carved Strings.

The day-long conference is one of the nation’s few undergraduate conferences focused on the humanities and was the first to feature medieval and early modern studies. Student participation has remained consistently strong, and continues to grow, since Professors John Black, associate professor of English, and Sandra Bardsley, associate professor of history, initiated the event in 2006.

Black and Bardsley incorporate student involvement in every step of the planning of the conference. From the pamphlets that get sent out to the community to the moderators who run the presenter sessions, students are an active part of the event.

The interdisciplinary conference provides students a hands-on experience that will prepare them for future education and employment. “Alums and employers tell us that students should be able to present arguments and information clearly,” says Bardsley. “The conference gives them a chance to do just that.”
