Abstract

Much critical attention has been devoted in recent years to the analysis of the medieval artes memorativae. The concern with the arts of memory, as exemplified by the recently collected translations of passages from influential artes edited by Mary Carruthers and Jan Ziolkowski under the title The Medieval Craft of Memory: An Anthology of Texts and Pictures, is part of a general surge of interest in rhetoric which also regards artes praedicandi, artes dictaminis, artes poetriae and homiletic compositions. As Carruthers and Ziolkowski note, arts of memory in the later Middle Ages differ from those of the classical or early medieval tradition also because some are addressed to a lay as well as clerical audience, and indeed a number of studies have been devoted to the specific uses of the artes in sermon making and their possible influence on Lollard literature.
