Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, Vol. 111C (2011)

Abstract: This paper deals with the use of domestic pottery in Ireland, in the medieval and modern periods. Apart from very limited imports in the fi fth, sixth and eighth centuries AD, domestic pottery was not in use in Ireland from the end of the Bronze Age (c. 600 BC) to the eighth century AD. The evidence for past pottery use in Ireland is primarily archaeological in nature as very little documentary sources or technological developments of the time survived. The introduction of pottery types along with the changing nature of ceramic forms through time is also discussed.
