The Use of Domestic Space in Early Medieval Roundhouses: An Experimental Archaeological Approach

Introduction: Houses and the domestic spaces they contain were the nucleus of Irish early medieval secular settlements. Working with reconstructed roundhouses at the Irish National Heritage Park, Co.Wexford since 2001 has highlighted a number of gaps in our understanding of how their interior domestic space could be used. The activities which can be carried out in any house are essentially limited and controlled by the physical capabilities of the structure itself in terms of interior visibility. Using a multi-disciplinary approach this study sought to establish the extent to which the chosen style of roundhouse architecture dictated how the domestic space within could be utilised.
