Abstract
In this article the site of the Bridgettine monastery of Naantali (founded in 1438) is examined as a lieu de mémoire, both with local and national aspects, and as a place for contemporary religious activity and use of history. The main focus is on the 1870’s as well as on the interwar period. The various aspects of the site (religious, antiquarian, etc.) seem to interact. The western legacy was emphasized by the actors, e.g. magnate Amos Anderson (1878– 1961). Interest in the site culminated in the building of monuments to commemorate the nunnery in the interwar period.
