Introduction: Thanks to the efforts of a number of scholars, the ideas and activities of Demetrius Cydones are in the process of becoming better known. Most of his writings have now been edited and published in a variety of locations. No complete and balanced biography of the man yet exists, however, and the following brief sketch is intended not to fill that need, but simply to introduce the main concern of this paper, a discussion of his Apology.
