Synopsis: The purpose of this study is to draw attention to a series of statements in the medieval Islamic sources about the etymology of the Arabic word asturlab and about the invention of the astrolabe.  These statements are discussed in chronological order, and the original Arabic and Persian texts are presented in the appendix to this paper.
