Abstract: This paper has two parts. The first is a critique of the principles upon which traditional narratives of Irish castles are based, and the second a lengthy exploration of the relationship between castle architecture and two particular forms of identity. The aim of these reflections is to reposition the castle at the centre of thinking about self-identity in medieval and post-medieval society. They are offered as a demonstration of the power of cross-disciplinary inquiry in castlestudies, particularly when that inquiry is informed by contemporary theory in the humanities.
