French Medieval Regions: A Concept in History

French Medieval Regions: A Concept in History

By Brigitte Bedos-Rezak

Historical Reflections / Réflexions Historiques, Vol. 19:2 (1993)

Synopsis: Examines how historians have been approaching the concepts of regions in how they applied to medieval France.  Shows how patriotism, language, terminology, patterns of kin and settlement structure, neighborliness, religion, ruling authority from above, local government and its resulting solidarity, a city’s magnetic centrality, the economy, a circumscribed network of communication, the defense of privileges and customs against encroaching or competing bodies’ all contributed to this concept.
